Shaver series and generations: how to compare models

Understand model names, changes to cutting heads and the accessories included in different kits.

A series name identifies a product family, such as Braun Series 7 or Philips Series 5000. That family can include several generations with different heads or handle features. The full model code identifies the version you are buying or finding parts for.

A kit adds another distinction: the same shaver may be sold with different cases, combs or cleaning equipment. When comparing offers, separate changes to the device from differences in the included accessories.

Philips Series 5000: rounded and angular heads

Philips’ US SH71/52 replacement page includes angular-shaped Series 5000 shavers and excludes rounded-shaped Series 5000. The SH50/52 page covers the rounded-head family. A listing that only says “Series 5000” leaves this distinction unresolved.

Use the head shape to narrow the search, then look for your full handle code in the supported-model list. The older Philips models pictured here illustrate differences between designs; their appearance alone cannot establish which replacement fits.

Braun: model and type numbers

Braun’s service search accepts a model or type number. Copy both from the handle if they are shown, then use the service information to identify the replacement cassette.

For a new shaver, compare the head, handle controls and accessories listed for each model. Two devices grouped under the same series in a shop may still use different cassettes.

Panasonic: foil, blades and sets

Panasonic’s parts tables list the outer foil, inner blades and combined set separately for supported ES models. Blade count is not enough to select a replacement: find the full ES code and read the column for the part you need.

Where two models share a cutting-set reference, that identifies a common replacement for those listed models. Chargers, plastic frames and cleaning stations need their own compatibility check.

Details to compare before buying

For each offer, record the full model code and country, replacement-head reference, battery and charging specifications, permitted wet use, and included accessories. Ask the seller about any missing detail that affects your choice.

A cheaper kit may omit the cleaning station or case while keeping the same shaving head. A newer generation may change the cutting system itself. The model specifications let you distinguish those two situations and compare their costs.
