No. You do not need shaving cream to dry shave with an electric shaver. Foam or gel is an option only when your exact model permits wet shaving. A dry-only shaver should not be used with shaving cream or water.
Start with the instructions for the handle you already own. A washable head, a waterproof-looking body or a replacement blade does not by itself establish permission to shave with foam. The decision table below separates these checks.
Check your shaver before using foam or gel
Read the shaving instructions, not just the cleaning section. If you only know the brand or series, find the complete model number before choosing a wet routine.
| What the instructions establish | Use shaving cream? | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Dry shaving only | No; use the dry routine. | Follow the separate cleaning instructions. |
| Wet & Dry, with foam or gel explicitly permitted | Optional; dry shaving remains a choice. | Use the product and cleaning method permitted for that model. |
| Washable, with no wet-shaving instruction found | Not established by washability alone. | Look for the wet-shaving section of the exact manual. |
| Model or instructions unknown | Leave wet use unconfirmed. | Identify the handle or ask the manufacturer before adding water or cream. |
Can you use shaving cream with a Philips Norelco shaver?
Philips US describes both dry shaving on clean skin and foam or gel use with its Wet & Dry shavers. Its advice does not make every Philips Norelco handle a wet-shaving model. Check your complete model code and the manual supplied for it.
Philips distinguishes a tap printed on the handle, which indicates washability, from a bath or shower marking. A flashing cleaning reminder is another message. The linked water-marking guide explains these distinctions; shower use still depends on your particular model.
For Braun, Panasonic or another brand, use that manufacturer’s instructions. Foil and rotary describe the cutting system; neither word establishes whether a specific handle accepts foam or gel.
Dry or wet: choose a routine your model supports
Dry shaving avoids the extra step of applying and removing foam. Wet shaving adds a product and a cleanup routine, so check both before deciding which suits your morning. You do not need to buy shaving cream just because you have bought an electric shaver.
If you prefer foam or gel, confirm that the shaver supports it before shopping for a product. Do not infer suitability from a retailer’s picture of water or from the fact that a replacement head fits.
This guide compares documented use conditions, not results from a shaving trial. It does not rank creams or promise a closer or more comfortable shave.
Clean the head after shaving
Disconnect the power lead before cleaning. Philips recommends cleaning after each shave and gives different procedures for washable and dry-clean-only models. Use the procedure for your handle to remove hair and product residue, then let the parts dry as directed.
Do not transfer a rotary-head cleaning method to a foil or OneBlade head. Our related cleaning guides explain the component differences and link to the relevant manufacturer instructions.
If the shaver still pulls or shaves poorly after correct cleaning and fitting, identify the cause before buying a replacement. Shaving cream does not establish that the cutting head is worn, and a new head does not repair a charging or motor fault.

Where’s my model number?
Use the complete model number from the handle, underside label or rating plate.

Check replacement references
| Reference guide | What to check |
|---|---|
| Philips Norelco parts and model guides | If a cutting part needs replacement after cleaning, identify the complete Philips Norelco handle before choosing a head. |
| Braun parts and model guides | Use the Braun model-selection path if your cutting head needs replacement; a cassette does not change the handle’s permitted wet use. |
